Andrew Goddard QC will be a guest speaker at the Deacons Construction Forum 2021, a virtual seminar series which will take place in July. Four insightful sessions will cover topical legal issues in the construction sector and Andrew’s session on Thursday 22 July will cover the topic of Remote Hearings in Arbitration and Litigation.
Andrew will be joined on the panel to discuss “Remote hearings in Arbitration and Litigation” by Peter Scott Caldwell, Chartered Civil Engineer, Mediator & Chartered Arbitrator at Caldwell Limited, and Daniel C. Lam SBS, JP, Board Member, Hospital Authority and Chairman, Hospital Authority Support Services Development Committee. The session will be moderated by K.K. Cheung, Partner, Deacons.
Before the pandemic, parties were usually required to attend hearings in person for arbitration or court proceedings. Nowadays, it is common to have remote hearings in order to address health concerns and travelling restrictions. However, remote hearings may not be the perfect substitute for physical hearings. In order to facilitate remote hearings, various guidelines have been published by the Court and arbitration bodies. In this session, the pros and cons of remote hearings will be discussed. The speakers will also share their views about whether remote hearings should replace physical hearings in the long term.
