Professor Doug Jones AO will present the keynote address at the GAR Live: Beijing 2021 conference on Friday 17 September 2021. GAR Live: Beijing will address topics including arbitration in Asia and the dos and don’ts of cross examination.
The event will be co-chaired by Tao Jingzhou of Arbitration Chambers in Hong Kong and Professor Liu Xiaohong, President of Shanghai University of Political Science & Law. The day will begin with welcoming remarks from Changqing Xie, Vice President of CIETAC’s arbitration court, followed by a keynote address from independent arbitrator Professor Doug Jones AO.
Xiaohong will then moderate a discussion on how international arbitration could be conducted in a more virtual, environmentally friendly way. That panel – composed of Hui Zhong partner Fei Ning, Zhong Lun’s Yuanfang Teng, Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer partner Anton Ware and former ICC Court of International Arbitration President Alexis Mourre – will also consider what the changes enforced by the pandemic are here to stay, and which will be ditched as soon as possible.
The next session will be led by Fuyong Chen, deputy secretary general of the Beijing Arbitration Commission and Beijing International Arbitration Center, who will be joined by CIETAC’s ADR departmental director Fan Yang, Debevoise & Plimpton partner David Rivkin, Chiann Bao of Arbitration Chambers, and Vicky Zhao of Beijing’s AnJie Law Firm. They will discuss institutional and other developments in international arbitration across Asia; and what the UK Supreme Court’s Halliburton v Chubb decision means for Chinese parties. Jingzhou will then moderate a symposium for which participants will be invited to submit topics in advance for general discussion.
