Specialisations

The core specialisation is construction, but from that has developed expertise in other areas. For example I.T. disputes and energy litigation and arbitration have become part of the mainstream of work done in Atkin Chambers. So whilst the practice of Members of Chambers covers the entire range of what is traditionally considered construction and engineering work, Members are also experienced in all aspects of I.T. and are well-equipped to offer specialist advice and advocacy on a wide range of hardware and software projects and across the entire gamut of energy related disputes.

The particular specialisation of individual Members of Chambers is set out on the Members page, but work done includes oil and gas exploration, energy, water and waste projects, process plant design and construction, computer hardware and software disputes, off-shore, marine and sub-marine structures, pipelines, transport and telecommunications. The range is from domestic conversions to skyscrapers, dams and road building projects. It extends from the private into the public sector and from the domestic into the international. Members also act for and against national and state governments.

It is nowadays impossible to divorce professional negligence from construction disputes and Chambers have, accordingly, built up experience in construction related professional negligence including computer consultants, architects, engineers, surveyors, solicitors and accountants.

Advocacy

At Atkin Chambers, great emphasis is placed on advocacy skills. Members' work includes pure advisory work and the drafting of contracts but the recognised strength of the English Bar, in particular in the international context, is its advocacy and cross examination skills. Members of Atkin Chambers take pride in their justified reputation as being specialist advocates.

Arbitration

Members of Atkin Chambers have long enjoyed a high profile in domestic and international arbitration. Its Members, therefore, are well versed in the particular skills required to appear as advocates in arbitrations and when sitting as an arbitrator. They have long experience in appearing in and conducting arbitrations under all of the domestic and international codes.

Adjudication

As adjudication has developed such an important role in the resolution of construction disputes, so the Members of Atkin Chambers have developed the necessary expertise to act in adjudications, to sit as adjudicators and to enforce or to avoid enforcement of the adjudicator's decision.

Client Care

The Members of Atkin Chambers and the Clerks place great emphasis on doing all that they can to respond to the particular demands of the individual lay and professional client. All complaints and client feedback should be communicated to one of our Senior Clerks, Simon Slattery or Justin Wilson.

Public and Licensed Access

Members of Chambers accept public and licensed access work under the provisions of the General Council of the Bar Code of Conduct in appropriate cases.
