The pupillage year is structured to provide both the Bar Council’s training requirements and the additional training we consider necessary for successful entry into the high-quality commercial work which a future practice in chambers involves.

Our pupillage system ensures that our pupils receive high quality training and, when the time comes, a fair and objective assessment of their individual applications for tenancy.

Pupils’ training and education is overseen primarily by designated pupil supervisors and the Pupillage and Recruitment Committee (“PRC”). We also provide mentors and fund the compulsory Bar continuing education courses required to be completed prior to qualification.

The PRC administers ongoing assessment during the pupillage year which covers advocacy and written exercises. It undertakes a formal review of each pupil’s progress at the end of their first six months of pupillage based on reports from each of the pupil supervisors as to the progress of pupils and a review of the results of written and advocacy exercises completed to date. The pupillage may be ended at six months by either party. For details on tenancy application, please click on the link on the left hand side.
