Guidance for Applicants for Pupillage
Atkin Chambers is a set of barristers who practise in technology and construction law.
The principal substantive law is the law of contract. This has to be applied in the commercial context of the design manufacture, supply and construction of buildings structures and technological processes of all descriptions. Many cases also require the application of the law relating to professional negligence.
Subject-matter ranges from power stations to bridges, motorways, hydro-electric works and tunnels and includes all kinds of offshore activities, nuclear, chemical and other heavy engineering plant, machine tools, computers (hardware and software), telecommunications equipment and similar electronic equipment.
This work will be attractive to those interested in the application of the law of contract in dispute resolution procedures of all kinds from High Court and appellate litigation to arbitration, mediation and conciliation. It requires the development of all the skills of the civil trial lawyer including the cross examination of witnesses of fact and, crucially, the ability to cross examine technical experts who are pre-eminent in their field. Junior tenants at Atkin Chambers rapidly acquire busy High Court practices. The pattern of work is such that tenants can expect to appear as advocates very frequently. The work is well remunerated and intellectually stimulating. A significant part of our work is for foreign clients of for UK clients engaged in international projects. Members of Chambers including junior tenants have considerable opportunities to work overseas.
